Branding  Print Design  Signage Country Pub

In the village of Handscare, Staffordshire, you’ll find a great pub and B&B called the
Olde Peculiar that’s been serving pints since 1700! During the COVID-19 Pandemic the pub had
to turn off the pumps and close its doors. By taking advantage of their unfortunate situation,
the Olde Peculiar decided it was time to rebrand and chose PHD to help them!

After a good old brainstorm (at the pub of course), it was time to get to work.
Firstly we created a logo that perfectly captured the history and antiquity of the pub,
We then used this to give the pub a makeover, installing new signage to the exterior and
surrounding area, including traditional hand painted features to the walls of the building.

We then took things a step further and created new menus, interior menu boards and various
way finding signage through out the building. The Olde Peculiar is now back open and doing
what they do best, quenching the thirst of all who come and go through the village.
Obviously we had to go down there on official business to check it all out! (to drink beer).

The Sly Old Fox

Branding Print Design Signage Pub & Restaurant

This ‘theatre bar’ – adjacent to the hippodrome in central Birmingham was a little
tired, surrounded by discerning customers with lots of alternatives available to
them. They new what us clever folks at PHd could do for pubs and restaurants to
shake things up and help bring in customers. So they gave us a call.

The branding

for this venue needed to fit in with the lovely traditional building, but bridge the gap to appeal to a
wider audience. With no real existing branding in place, we had no constraints and went for a 100%
bespoke new logo, blending a time-honoured old world look with a fun branding scheme to a create
a homely ‘proper’ pub ‘vibe’.

The hoarding

is a vital way of building interest while somewhere is being built (or in this case re-fitted). It’s a huge
advert, that appeals to the curiosity in all of us. We cleverly used large panels to give huge coverage,
without having to actually cover all the hoarding. All the design and details used our branding
alongside sneak reveals of what was coming to stir up anticipation for the big launch.

On the menu

They needed a clear, compelling menu design. The menu changes regularly, so the design
needed to be versatile and easy to update while looking delicious to customers. The simple
segregations of food types, quality illustrations and classic typography helps to set the tone
for this old style ‘proper’ pub restaurant.

SE Controls

Branding Print Design Digital Signage Infographics Manufacturing

SE Controls create wonderful solutions to help naturally ventilate buildings, for
comfort and fire safety reasons. They deal with large contracts, and their
competitors are huge (really huge) players. So to compete they needed PHd to
step in and make them look the part, so that customers believed that they were
every bit as good as the big boys (or indeed the big girls).

How we’ve helped make SE Controls look sharp, considered and capable is by making a very
clear set of rules during their re-brand. These make sure all the design aspects work together
effectively to create a strong design similarity on everything from vehicle livery to datasheets,
adverts and brochures. The hard work at the start helped make everyone’s life easier, and even
our simplification of technical information helps customers grasp more, and then order more!

Scoop ‘n’ Shake

Branding Packaging Infographics Print Design Signage Restaurant & Takeaway

This delicious company came to PHd as they wanted their puddings and
milkshakes to look tasty! We were only too happy to help, and the brand
we created is one of our favourites, working fabulously and looking
delectable on everything from menu’s, cups, and building livery.

The branding focused on clean soft lines, with visuals of both the ice
cream scoops and the straw of the milkshakes built in. The vibrant
colour scheme was used to add vitality and to represent all the crazy
flavours available. We added infographic icons to the branding to make
understanding the options, and ordering that little bit easier… Yum!

Branding is important to everyone, but especially in food and drink
when you have to make passers by have a physical reaction (hunger and

Branding Infographics Print Design Signage Estate Agents

Maguire Jackson have been with us since their inception in 2005. With PHd
functioning as their on call design department, they’ve gone on to (according to the
honourable Rightmove) be the biggest estate agents in Birmingham. Our design
work has been admired by their customers and competitors, and we’re always looking
to find ways to keep them leading in this rather competitive marketplace.

My oh my, we’ve done a lot of design since creating their hand crafted logo all those years
ago. We’ve developed ways to target individuals, investors, developers, sellers, vendors
and landlords through fun, serious or educational (dependent on the recipient) leaflets,
adverts, brochures and much, much more (more than you’d care to read about). We love
you guys at Maguire Jackson, we hope to still be working with you in another 15 years!

Hilton Foods

Signage Infographics Food

Office signage / presentation for major sales pitch
Hilton had a 4 hour meeting to demonstrate how their facility, their
knowledge and expertise could help Tesco and in doing; win a lucrative
5 year contract. The ‘steaks’ were high, the time short, but we knew we
could solve their rather daunting problem.

Their office was transformed: meeting rooms brightened by window graphics of grassy fields.
Hallways vibrantly illustrated Hilton’s focus on ethical traceability of food, where farm to table was
visually represented, alongside messages showing customers thoughts on this issue. Five
fictitious families were created to demonstrate the main shopper demographic splits.

Their interests, finances and shopping habits were demonstrated through mock up profiles,
kitchens and fridges. A virtual reality cinema (featuring real reclaimed Odeon seats) showed the
predicted shopping habits of the future. In the final room we created a modern, funky meeting
room, highlighting how they’ve evolved as a company, and how this equates to benefits for Tesco.

They got the deal! This secured over 1000 jobs for the next 5
years! Hilton now use this approach globally to similar

The sales literature

This folder and suite of 12 brochures, was designed to clarify the services Else Solicitors offer.
Solicitors services can be quite confusing, and not always the most engaging. The solution; simplify
the content, use interesting facts, tips, approachable language, interesting print techniques and
striking bespoke ‘else’ style imagery to catch the eye of recipients.

Britannic Fire & Security Systems

Branding Literature Signage Fire & Security Sector

Britannic are an established fire & security systems company based in
Solihull in the West Midlands. Their logo and branding had been
neglected for years, which was tarnishing their image, so they contacted
PHd design to help.

Britannic’s logo was a little dated and had been used inconsistently, as such their visual
image didn’t represent their very professional service. As their company was well known
already we needed to find a way to change their existing logo to look impressive,
trustworthy and sharp, while maintaining recognition of the old logo. This new logo was
then used to great effect on stationery, signage, livery, datasheets and presentations.

Acticare can supply care homes with everything from medical items to
furniture and uniforms. They supply a great range and a great service, but
they needed to have clear and appropriate branding alongside clever
marketing items to win over clientele! PHd to the rescue!

Branding and Infographics

The first stage in the masterplan was to make sure their busy customer
targets recognise Acticare’s quality through their professional branding,
and to understand quickly what they can offer through a series of bespoke
icons segregating their wide range of services visually.


Catalogues & Direct mail

The second stage in our sneaky ploy to win over Acticare’s customers was to
target decision makers with a swish physical catalogue (that’ll sit in the office as
constant reference), and a lovely memorable pack of branded biscuits and a gift
pen… two things that mean Acticare will be remembered! We then created
regular mailers with lovely special offers, to tempt them that little bit more!


Office Signage

The final stage in our scheme was to ensure that when they got meetings with the large
care home groups… that their offices looked great, inspired confidence, and sealed the
deal during contract negotiations! Oh we shouldn’t forget… this new office provided a
rather lovely place for their loyal hardworking staff to work productively within!
